In his series “swiping and scrolling” Jakob Urban explores the desires that burn at our fingertips and leave their marks on glass screens. Looking at these daily movements that feel all too familiar in our hyper-connected world, Urban sees them for their artistic potential, relating them to brushstrokes and calligraphy. The finger that is swiping through dating apps, scrolling through social media, shopping online, and texting friends becomes the initiator of its own kind of mark making, bringing the “digital” back around to its original etymology, relating to “digitus” – the finger. For the iteration “echo, stain”, Urban records these performative acts as line notes that are screenshotted and edited together to form an archive of swipes and scrolls, overlayed with a scan of the same movements performed with watercolour on glass. These different techniques come together as layers, forming a singular printed image that operates as a metaphorical hard drive for the intersection between the physical and the virtual.
